Illustration by Helen KrayenhoffEveryone knows about planting bulbs for spring flowers, though they often don’t remember until they actually see a host of golden daffodils in full bloom. Well, now is the time to plan for tulips, freesias, narcissi, crocus, hyacinths, etc. Berkeley Hort has an excellent selection, as well as accessories (bulb planters, bulb food, etc.) to prepare your garden for a glorious display next spring.

Once you’ve brought your little treasures home, don’t bury them until soil temperatures have cooled a bit (usually late October in the SF Bay Area). Be sure to keep the bulbs in paper bags in a cool, dark place.
